Must Do's in Oahu

In December of 2022, I had the opportunity to spend nine days on the island of Oahu. I was in awe of the beauty of this island. The vast landscapes, the waves on the North Shore, and the lush mountain ranges were all spectacular. It was an experience that I am so thankful for and want to be able to share with others. Below, I have laid out my Top Ten Things to do in Oahu!

1.  Diamond Head Crater Trailhead

Kapahulu, Honolulu, HI 96815

https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/oahu/diamond-head-state-monument/

This trailhead is located in the Diamond Head State Monument in Honolulu.  It is a 0.8 mi. hike to the summit of the extinct Diamond Head Volcano. The hike ascends about 560 feet and includes moderately difficult uphill climbs to reach the summit. The hike also includes a 225-foot tunnel that allows you to climb into the Fire Control Station as well. Once at the top, you have absolutely gorgeous views of Waikiki. The view is worth the climb up, but it is recommended that you get to the park early, as it is a popular attraction!

2. The Sunrise Shack

59-158 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa, HI 96712

Located in Haleiwa, this shack was the absolute cutest! It was filled with bright colors and even chickens that ran around the property. Here, they sold smoothie bowls, drinks, coffee, snacks, meals, and even their own merchandise. They've got outdoor seating so you can take your breakfast on the go or stick around and enjoy the scenery. It was a great little stop and the smoothies were fantastic!

3. Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch, Kaneohe, HI 96744

Home to the Jurassic Valley, this beautiful ranch has been a film site for numerous shows and movies. Not only that, but it is an active ranch that also has a market where you can purchase their products. The ranch offers multiple ways to tour the valley including bus, horseback, UTVs, and Jeep. It is great for movie lovers, but also those who just want to explore the beauty of Oahu!

4. Haleiwa

Haleiwa, HI, 96712

If I had to choose one of my favorite places on Oahu, it would 100% be Haleiwa! From the cutest shops to the biggest waves, this is a must-do in Oahu! It was absolutely stunning and it was amazing getting to watch everyone surf the waves. I visited in the early morning and it was the perfect time, not too crowded and yet, there was still plenty of activity out on the water. Enjoy the beautiful sights and fun shops!

5. Ehukai Pillbox Hike

MX72+Q7, Haleiwa, HI 96712

Located just behind the Sunset Elementary School, this hike is truly wonderful! It is a 2.3 mile loop with excellent view of Haleiwa and the North Shore. It is moderately difficult with steep inclines. There are lots of roots and pine needles, so be mindful of where you step, as it may be slippery or difficult to navigate (take this from someone who decided to hike in Birkenstocks!). There are ropes along the trail to help aid you in climbing up the steep parts. The forest scenery is very beautiful and quite a drastic change from the ocean views you'll have at the top. Overall: A worth-while hike and a great workout!

6. Halona Blow Hole

Halona Blowhole Lookout8483 HI-72, Honolulu, HI 96825, USA

If you're a fan of the movie, 50 First Dates, you'll love this destination! Not only was it a film site, but it is also just a gorgeous location! From the bright blue water to the rocky cove, this place was absolutely stunning. It was a busier location, but getting to see the blowhole was pretty fantastic. Through underwater lava tubes, the blowhole is able to spray water up to 30 feet in the air, which is quite a spectacular site! The cove is also a beautiful place to lay out your beach towel or jump around in the waves, although it can get pretty crowded.

7. Manoa Falls

Na Ala Hele, Honolulu, HI 96822

When ranking the hikes I did in Hawaii, this was by far my favorite. Originally, we did not plan on doing this hike, but I am so glad we did! It is only a 1.7-mile roundtrip hike and the views are so rewarding. With an elevation gain of about 616 ft., this hike is considered moderately challenging. The damp ground can make this hike a bit muddy and hard to navigate, but you do not want to miss the views! Along the hike, you'll be emerged into the rainforest and get to see all the beautiful greenery that Oahu has to offer. Swimming is not permitted in the falls, but it is still a fantastic hike. Be sure to bring bug spray!

8. Waikiki

Honolulu County, Hawaii

As one of the world-famous neighborhoods on Oahu, Waikiki has plenty to offer for everyone! Whether you're looking to shop, dine, or lay out on the beach, there is something for everyone here! Waikiki is well-known for its beaches and being the place to catch a wave! While here, I tried surfing for the first time and it was such a fun time! There are also Catamaran tours, parasailing trips, and plenty of water-activities to keep you entertained! For those who love history, be sure to visit the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue, which depicts the famous Hawaiian Olympian and one of the world's greatest surfers. With it being near the city, it is usually quite crowded and can be difficult to find a spot on the beach. You will also need to consider making dinner and activity reservations.

No matter where you go on Oahu, you are sure to have the best time! On such a beautiful island, you can't go wrong! Remember to respect the beauty of the land and the people who live here. Take time to appreciate their history and culture! Feel free to leave suggestions on some of your favorite places on Oahu!
